If you’re not familiar with the Design world it can probably seem like a pretty confusing thing when you’re looking to hire someone for your Design needs. Most recently I’ve noticed a lot of business owners looking to Twitter to find designers for whatever project they have in mind, only to be bombarded with generic “Hey Hire ME!” responses. This can all be a little overwhelming for someone who is not familiar with the process of hiring a Designer, and honestly it can be a little off-putting. So, how exactly do you find the professionals and why should you hire them?
It’s no secret that the Design world is littered with people who half-way know the software, can throw a logo together in 5 minutes and slap it on the internet. I think a big contribution to this happening is because people are under the impression that Graphic Design is just a way to make a quick buck. However, those of us who are professionals know that’s not the case. Design takes years of dedication to the craft and most of us spend our entire lives learning it. Good Design is about telling a story, it’s about communication, not just purely about aesthetics.
I know you may see Designers out there offering logos for $50, $20, $10, or even $5, and I know that seems awfully tempting, right? Well you know that phrase “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”? That statement defines that situation. Probably 99% of Designers who offer their services for that little are simply looking to make a quick buck off of you, and have little to no interest in providing you or your business with the attention and value it deserves. Sure you might get a decent logo, but is it really communicating the mission of your business? Is it truly a representation of what your company stands for? Can it truly be the face of your entire Identity? These are all important questions that you need to ask yourself.
In my last post I spoke briefly about Logo Design being important since it’s most often the first point of contact you have with your market. Professional Designers take the time to sit down with you, get to know you, get to know your business and what you’re looking to accomplish. As Professionals it is our job to provide you with a Design that communicates an idea, a value, a mission, and that can’t be done any other way than engaging with you.
So is your Designer engaging with you? Are they asking you questions about you and your business? Are they asking why you do what you do, or what you want to accomplish? What it boils down to is this: Are they taking an interest in helping you solve your problems through Design? If the answer to that questions is no, then you’re probably not dealing with a Professional.
If you’re reading this so far and you’re thinking ‘why is it even important that I hire a Professional, can’t anyone do this kind of stuff?’ well, here’s the answer to that: Yes, anyone can pick up Illustrator and “design” something, but it takes a professional to Design something that communicates a concept, tells a story, engages the audience, or communicates value.
Think of it like this. You land an interview with a huge company, I mean this is your dream job, and you want to look good, right? Ok, so you know that you need a new suit for this interview, are you going to go downtown to the Butcher for a fitting? Are you going to go to your sister-in-law who’s an Accountant? No, of course not! You’re going to go to a Tailor because they’re a professional at their craft, and you know that they’re going to provide you with quality service and a quality product. Why wouldn’t it be the same with a Designer? If you need a Professional Logo Design done don’t go down the street to Bob The Butcher, Or Anne The Accountant, you go to someone who has the knowledge and skill to provide you with a quality service. Just like hiring a Tailor for an interview, you hire a Graphic Designer for your design needs, because you always want the best, and you always want to look good.
As a business owner I’m sure that the investment you’ve made in trying to build a professional business is important to you. Why would you risk letting someone who doesn’t care about that investment be a part of it? When you make an investment in a Designer you’re allowing them to be a part of your business, your dream, your goals. Why not hire a professional who cares about what you want to accomplish? Because as Designers that’s what we’re here to do, provide you with Design that creates value and engages your market. So what kind of Designer are you going to hire?
