It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in the business for 6 months or 15 years, there’s one thing that you’ll have to learn to deal with and that’s discouragement. This is particularly true for those who are just starting out in the Design industry because it can seem like breaking in is nearly impossible. I’m going to tell you something that might surprise you. It’s ok to feel that way. However, that statement probably doesn’t mean what you think it means.
Discouragement is a feeling that will sneak up on anyone who is trying to live their passion and start a new business. You’re putting your all into it and yet nothing is happening, you aren’t seeing the results. Like I said, it’s ok to feel this way, it’s pretty natural actually. But what I think is important to remember is to not let that discouragement control you. Let’s face it, trying to break into the Design industry can be scary, you’re essentially putting yourself out on the line to be judged and being rejected can hurt. Does that mean that you should give up? NO, OF COURSE NOT! Rejection is simply a step you must take to success.
If you’ve read any stories of someone who is wildly successful they’ll often tell you that the reason they found success is because they essentially figured out how to NOT do something. Take every single mistake you make and learn from it, adapt, and apply that lesson. Is your marketing strategy not working? Great, that’s one way you at least know won’t work. Your Design concept not going anywhere? That’s cool, you’re just wading through the muck to find your nugget of gold. I think this is the biggest thing that beginners don’t understand, and that’s how to deal with failure. Even when you fail you’re really winning because you’re simply learning a lesson and taking one more step towards success.
But what if you’re putting in the work, you’re learning from mistakes you’ve made, and you’re still not seeing any results? That’s easy, there’s one word that is the answer to all your problems – PATIENCE. Something that you have to get through your head is that your success is not going to come overnight. You have to put in the work every single day and continue to hustle relentlessly. Nothing is going to come easy and no one is going to give you a handout. That’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth. You want success? Go Get It! Take the discouragement you feel and use it as fuel for your dreams. Bottle that feeling up, shove it in the tank, and use that fire to light the path to your success. I realize that sounds a bit cheesy or cliché, but it’s the truth. My greatest motivation has always been someone telling me or making me feel like I couldn’t do something, and I think to an extent we all have that motivation to prove someone wrong in that aspect.
Of course that brings me to another point that you have to realize. Even though it can be useful to use that discouragement from someone telling you that you won’t make it to fuel your hustle, it’s even more important to realize that you don’t have to prove anything to anyone but yourself. The only thing standing in the way of you and your success is yourself. Stop making excuses and go out there and make it happen. At the end of the day the only one that has to live with the choices and decisions you’ve made is you, and because of that the only person you have to prove anything to is yourself.
Discouragement can be such a paralyzing feeling, but I’m here to tell you that you can beat it. Don’t let fear be what keeps you from your dreams. I’ll leave you with these words that you’ll always hear me preaching, and it’s what I try to live my life by:
“Success is never final, fear is never fatal. It’s courage that counts” -John Wooden
